Dear Patient,

Our Patient Information Group (PIG), is encouraging patients to give their views about how the practice is doing. They would like to be able to ask the opinions of as many patients as possible and are asking if people would like to provide their email addressses and join the 'virtual group' so that we can contact you by email every now and again to ask you a question or two.

We aim to gather around a hundred patients from as broad a spectrum as possible to get a truly representative sample. We need young people, workers, retirees, people with long term conditions and people from non-British ethnic groups.

Peel Medical Practice

Patient Information Group (PIG)

The Peel Medical Practice PPG, known as the PIG (Patient Information Group) is an new but established group of over a year. The group meets monthly in the early stages with an aim of quarterly meetings in the future. The group consists of volunteer patients, a GP, a member of the reception team, a member of the nursing team, and the business manager.  

There is a sub-group of the PIG called the ‘Virtual Group’, this group is designed for patients who don’t have the time to come to meetings but still want to get involved. A form is completed online to join this group.

In the previous year the PIG has been involved in the following Patient Information Evenings held in the surgery:

• Child Health
• First Aid & CPR
• Men’s Health
• Carers

Patient Participation Groups are not new. The first were formed in 1972, the

National Association for Patient Participation was formed in 1978 as their umbrella organisation. Patient Participation Groups work with their practices to provide practical support, to help patients to take more responsibility for their own health and to provide strategic input and advice. They are based on cooperation between the practice staff and patients. They help to improve communication.

The activities of PPGs vary because they develop to meet local need.
